Intervention is seen as a metaphor for the importance of culture and its dynamics for the development of man as a cultural being.
The competition project of the Chapultepec Cultural Center in Guadalajara, Mexico, takes inspiration from Pufendorf's definition of culture: “Culture refers to all the ways in which men overcome their original barbarism and, through art, become fully human.”
The design concept of the project is based on the opposition of two different states of the building: “barbaric” and “social”.
“Barbarian” is the infrastructural core, the set of all vital aspects for the functioning of the building. This core is independent, tough, and uncompromising in relation to the environment. “Social” encapsulates the programmatic functions of the building; it compromises with the existing urban structure.
The facade, made of Corten steel and glass, allows the cultural center building to merge with the dynamic city, interacting with all the functions of the “capsules”, open spaces of free organization.
